This morning, 7 News kept mentioning that Turnpike Chairman Matt Amorello would like the I-90 connector tunnel to reopen to traffic sometime today. With traffic as bad as it is all around the city, I can understand the pressure to reopen the tunnel. But with public confidence in the integrity and workmanship, and design of the tunnels at a low, I wonder how many people will choose to use it once it reopens.
In related news, I agree that Governor Mitt Romney is trying to provide political subterfuge with this latest attempt to oust Amorello from his position. Given that public confidence in the tunnels is low, I expect my state executive to reassure the public that all levels of government are working hard to ensure public safety and general accountability rather than launch a very bitter, public fight to remove the person currently in charge during the crisis. At the same time, perhaps the Globe's suggestion that Amorello resign isn't such a bad idea either. Either way, public acrimony at a time when we need true leadership isn't helping anyone.
What happened to the governor of yesteryear who bravely showed us how safe the subways are when terrorism was high on our list of fears? We could use a little more of him now.
